Eat your vegetables?

“Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie.”

–Jim Davis

Well, here we are: time to get the final plans settled for the Big Dinner That Is a Lot of Stress to Prepare. Actually, I like the prep work, assuming I have time. But the decisions about what to make, who likes what, and what I can reasonably manage… sometimes, it makes sense to just make reservations.

But no. For me, cooking a special meal for those I love and care about is something I enjoy. We all agree on most of it (okay, I really do NOT like green bean casserole or jello mold with cottage cheese–nopers–nope-no). The turkey, the potatoes/ sweet potatoes/ squash/ rolls…those are pretty easy to plan on. The stuffing is another factor. Meat dressing or bread stuffing? Or both? (I may just do both this year.) Peas or no peas? (My husband dislikes peas, my son-in-law dislikes squash, and what exactly can the little one chew? She has five teeth.)

Desserts are a welcome relief from the main course negotiations. We all like pie. And even if there are only 4-5 of us, there will be options. I like fruit pies, others like pumpkin, or chocolate pudding pie, and my husband loves custard pie.

Can we just skip the whole meal and go with dessert?

Happy are those who can just slide their feet under the table. (Just kidding…sort of.) And did you know that “Over the River and Through the Woods” is a Thanksgiving song? Here’s a fun version done by Pentatonix ft. Lindsey Stirling.

Be well,
