On September 27, 1822, French scholar Jean-François Champollion announced he had deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphics using the Rosetta Stone.
This reminds me of Charles Simic’s poem, “Stone.” I had the unique privilege of hearing Simic read a few years ago at The Frost Place. He was not at all what I expected; he insisted on being called “Charlie” and he was so incredibly funny! And there I was, all fan-girling…
It was a lovely reading, and I am glad I got to meet him.
