Happy Birthday, e.e. cummings

(Edward Estlin Cummings)

Most people have a poem in mind when e.e. cummings’ name comes up; sometimes, it’s “anyone lived in a pretty how town” or “[in just–].”

For this time of year, though, my mind turns to “1(a” and the whole almost koan-like, meditative aspect of this poem.

Considered by many scholars as one of the foremost poets associated with modernism, at the time of his death on September 3, 1962, cummings was the second most widely read poet in the United States, after Frost (poets.org).
