Happy Grandparents’ Day!

Do you have a favorite poem that celebrates grandparents? I do. I love Margaret Walker’s poem, “Lineage.” She is celebrating the strength and resilience of her female forbears, speaking of how they worked hard doing necessary chores, and that they were “full of sturdiness and singing.” The speaker goes on to say that [her] grandmothers were “full of memories” and have “many clean words to say,” evoking images of honest work, simple goodness, and women to look up to. In fact, the speaker ends the poem by saying,

My grandmothers were strong.
Why am I not as they?
This is often the case, isn’t it? We sometimes tend to measure ourselves against an almost impossible standard, one that we’ve actually set up for ourselves. Yet, others might disagree: we are strong in our own right. Our grandparents would be proud.
Take good care of each other,
